Five surprising foods to cut from your diet if you want to ‘lose belly fat’

It’s no secret that shedding the pounds is never easy, especially in the run up to Christmas.

Sometimes it’s hard to know what foods to eat, which ones to ditch, and the best sort of meal plans to follow, but a simple piece of advice may help. Health experts say ridding five simple foods from your diet could help you aid weight loss quickly.

Content creator @healthtips33333 recently shared a video on TikTok explaining which common foods you need to ditch. The first, unsurprisingly, is beer due to the “empty calories” you consume with each gulp.

Other high calorie foods include peanut butter and almond butter, according to the health guru. The popular sweet delights are usually eaten with bread, which “can lead to abdominal fat accumulation”.

In the clip, the presenter added: “Sugary soft drinks. These drinks contain a lot of sugar and empty calories, which are not good for the body, and only lead to diabetes and fat accumulation.

“Instant potato chips. These are ultra-processed foods that contain a lot of refined carbohydrates, but few nutrients. It’s best to chose unprocessed potatoes.

“Quick cooked rice. This includes processed foods like glutinous rice, popcorn and especially rice crackers, which are digested quickly by the body and cause blood sugar levels to rise.”

The video has been viewed over 70,000 times since it was shared, and people were quick to comment too. It seems some people learn something new about what they eat every day.

One person said: “All the good things in life.” A second added: “It’s all about calorie deficit guys. You can eat all of these, but in moderation.”

A third replied: “We should change the bad habits for our health.” Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “This is not going to be easy.”

Shifting weight is all about what you eat, say experts
Shifting weight is all about what you eat, according to experts

If you’re wondering if there’s any truth in the claims, drinking beer can cause weight gain and increase belly fat. This is because it has a high calorie content, with a pint of lager containing around the same number of calories as a slice of pizza.

There is also evidence that sugary drinks can lead to weight gain due to their high sugar content. Also, when you drink something with artificial sweeteners, your pancreas could produce insulin to prepare for sugar that isn’t there. This can disturb metabolism and lead to weight gain.

As most people know, crisps are also high in calories, salt and fat. While rice cakes are low in calories, they also contain few nutrients and can be high in carbohydrates.

Eating too many carbohydrates can lead to weight gain, especially if you fail to burn off the extra calories through physical activity. Meanwhile, peanut butter can have its benefits if you opt for a good quality version.

As long as you eat it in moderation, it shouldn’t cause you to gain weight. The NHS points out everyone should eat a balanced diet to ensure good health, which means consuming a wide variety of foods in the right proportions.

It’s also essential to eat the right amount of food and drink to have and maintain a healthy body weight. You can find more advice here.
