Tess Daly’s secret to staying slim and how she still enjoys ‘chips and chocolate’ in diet

Strictly Come Dancing’s Tess Daly has shared her secret to maintaining a slim figure while still indulging in treats like chips and chocolate.

Speaking to Hello! magazine, the 55-year-old TV host revealed that she doesn’t exercise every day but incorporates stretching exercises into her routine.

Tess, who is married to television and radio presenter Vernon Kay, works with a personal trainer and emphasised the importance of not depriving herself of any foods, even those known for their high fat content.

She said: “I try to work out every other day. In between, I’ll do flexibility and stretching exercises. I believe flexibility is what keeps you young. I do aerobics workouts and I’ll lift a few weights to retain muscle definition.

“I also increase my protein intake where I can. It helps me feel sharper mentally, too. But don’t get me wrong, I also love my chips and chocolate. I don’t deprive myself of anything. Moderation is key.”

Describing herself as an active person, Tess highlighted the importance of self-care, especially for women who juggle roles as nurturers and caregivers. Self-care, she explained, enables one to better care for others.

Earlier this year, the former model divulged her daily routine, including her typical breakfast. This usually comprises yoghurt with blueberries or cherries, which she heats in the microwave before adding granola and a drizzle of maple syrup or honey.

Tess usually has her breakfast at around 8:30am, about an hour after waking up, and ensures she eats approximately 45 minutes before her workout to enhance her energy levels.

In a conversation with Women’s Health, Tess revealed that her morning routine begins with 20 minutes of yoga, often following along with Yoga with Adriene on YouTube, which provides sessions for stiff backs and flexibility.

During a 2020 chat with Ruth Crilly on YouTube, Tess admitted her love for food is “too much” and that she “refused to diet”, yet she has succeeded in integrating healthy eating habits into her lifestyle.

She disclosed that since the age of 16, she hasn’t consumed red meat and didn’t like the gristle in sausages and fat in meat, opting for chicken and fish instead.

Reports from 2021 indicated that the television personality maintained a largely vegetarian diet, steered clear of carbohydrates, and favoured smoothies made with “wholesome” ingredients.

Additionally, Tess shared an image in 2020 of a lunch she prepared for herself and her children, featuring a variety of vegetables, including cucumber, lettuce, carrots, and celery, as well as strawberries and blueberries.
