Health experts say Usher’s diet for new tour is ‘harmful’

World-famous singer Usher got candid about his preparation before heading on the road for his upcoming tour where he’s set to perform a mammoth 80 concert lineup across six countries. The pop star is known for his energetic, highly choreographed concerts leaving many curious about his fitness routine and diet to get in such impeccable shape, particularly after the singer got shirtless during his Super Bowl Halftime Show earlier this year.

Fans got more than they bargained for when the Yeah! hitmaker revealed he pairs his intensive workout and dance regime with not eating anything on Wednesdays. He told the Wall Street Journal: “I typically try to start around 11pm the previous day, then go the entire day Wednesday just drinking water.”

Dietitian and author of Meals that Heal, Dr Carolyn Williams, branded Usher’s claims as “harmful” as she told the Daily Mail that the 24-hour fast on its own is “not so alarming” but when paired with heavy exercise it could be detrimental. She advised: “If you’re going to fast for 24 hours, you need to go easy on the physical activity. Fasting all day with just water and still trying to keep up this workout schedule and everything, that’s not what is generally recommended.”

Intermittent fasting is a well-known diet plan, but Dr Williams noted that taken to this extent it can cause headaches and “an electrolyte imbalance” while research around the method has found mixed results. Some research claims it can aid weight loss while other studies link skipping meals to a higher risk of heart disease and cancer.

Elsewhere in his diet claims, the 45-year-old has ditched coffee and breakfast for celery juice and a unique lemon water concoction. When it comes to fitness, the high-energy popstar opts to start his day with some calming morning yoga that “activates” his organs while sitting out in the heat but neither of these seemingly more attainable routines got any more approval from the expert.

While celery juice is low on calories and high in nutrients like potassium folate and vitamins A, C and K, Dr Wiliams noted it’s not “necessarily superior to other vegetables” but admitted it would at the very least hydrate the singer. As for his unique drink of choice, hot water with lemon, ginger, and cayenne pepper, the health expert blasted it as “nutritionally useless” but not harmful.
