CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Fresh meals prepared daily for kids are just weeks away. A pilot program is starting with the kids at all three Ridge Kids Academy in Cabell County.
The education center is ready to open the fridge door to a healthier tomorrow. A program that started in Morgantown by the Healthy Kids Incorporated has set up their second location at the Mountwest Culinary School — making locally sourced foods and bringing them straight to the kids.
Sarah Adkins, a parent and teacher with Ridge Kids Academy, said “get them at a younger age will help them be on the right path to eat healthier throughout their childhood and into adult,” allowing them to eat less junk food and “taste a variety of different foods.”
Adkins is excited for what this means for the kids’ overall nutrition and health.
“Obesity, overweight, other health issues that might occur eating foods that are not healthy for them.”
Sarah Miller, director of the Barboursville Ridge Kids Academy campus, said she saw the February menu for the day care, adding, “I really like the pasta dishes that are on there – the sauces do have hidden veggies in it. They look really yummy.”
Miller also said the fresh meals will help to cut back on waste since the food now is pre-made and a delivered — meaning the food would go bad and be wasted.
As of now, the plan is to start distribution in February. Funding to help launch the program came from the Pallottine Foundation.
